We are excited to announce that, earlier in March, the Côté Gold team gathered to pour our first gold bar, representing the first step of production for what we truly believe will be decades of operations. Bringing Côté over the finish line represented the culmination of over 15 million hours of work, four years of construction and a $3 billion investment. It is a project that will be transformational for both IAMGOLD and the communities we work with.
Over its 18-year mine life, the mine is expected to contribute $10 billion to Ontario’s GDP, $5 billion in wages, and provide nearly 600 full-time jobs. It will not only become one of Canada’s largest gold producers but also a model for modern and sustainable mining in the country. Positioned as an innovation leader, Côté is the first gold mine in North America that is designed and built for a fully automated haulage fleet. Automation not only brings significant benefits in health and safety and operating efficiencies but is a considerable step forward in the evolution of mining and the skilled workforce of tomorrow.
Seeing Côté through to completion was a massive endeavour, one that would have not been possible without the extraordinary efforts and dogged determination of our team on the ground, who consistently upheld the highest health and safety standards: our top priority.
Of course, this success extends well beyond our teams at Côté, and we would like to thank our community, Indigenous, government, and business partners for their unwavering support throughout this journey. It has been a privilege and honour to accomplish this project alongside such dedicated partners. Their support has helped us tremendously!
“The opening of a new mine is no small feat. It is a tremendous milestone for a mining company, a very special moment in a miner’s career, and on a personal note, it’s also a very special moment for me as President & CEO of IAMGOLD,” said Renaud Adams, President and CEO.
